Where will your pet stay?
If you are leaving an abusive relationship, you will probably worry about what will happen to your pet(s). There are a few different options you have to keep your pets safe depending on where you stay.
- Ask a trusted friend or family member to look after your pet.
- If you are applying for an Emergency Protection Order, protect your animals by including them in it. The Protection Against Family Violence Act (PAFVA) allows for a judge to consider adding things to Protection Orders that will protect the victim. This can include your pet(s).
Read more in our Protective Orders.
The Alberta SPCA has a brochure on including your pets in an Emergency Protection Order. You can read it here. This brochure might be helpful when you talk to police or your lawyer.
Pet Safekeeping Program
The Alberta SPCA Pet Safekeeping Program offers temporary care for the pets of domestic violence victims who need to escape their abusive situations and have no other place for their pets. The program is offered at no charge to those in need. Anyone in Edmonton and surrounding areas can access the program through one of the Edmonton area women’s shelters, or by calling 211.
